The VA is now beginning to pay claims associated with burn pits.

The VA has what they call presumptive claims. At this point, the presumptive conditions include:

• Asthma
• Rhinitis
• Sinusitis

These are some of the conditions where veterans may be able to file a claim based on their exposure history.

One of the most important things to do is to get a proper diagnosis.

The VA is not going to pay a claim unless you have medical documentation showing that you have a diagnosed condition.

So, if you believe you may have one of these conditions, such as a respiratory issue, a cardiac condition, or you are concerned about a possible cancer diagnosis, you should see a doctor and begin documenting your symptoms and medical history.

Most importantly, make sure you register with the VA Burn Pit Registry.

It is simple to do. You can visit VA.gov and search for the Burn Pit Registry to learn how to complete the registration.

Veterans who may be eligible to participate include those who served in Southwest Asia or other qualifying areas of operation after August 2, 1990.

It is important to register even if you are not currently experiencing symptoms.

The VA continues to study the long-term effects of burn pit exposure and track conditions that may be connected to these exposures.

By registering, documenting your symptoms, and keeping your medical records updated, you are not only helping protect your own benefits but may also help future generations of veterans who experience similar conditions.
