What Benefits Does VA’s Veteran Readiness & Employment Program Offer?

If you’re a veteran with disabilities, you’re probably wondering if opportunities are available to rejoin the workforce. Thankfully, the VA has many options to help you reintegrate to find a fulfilling career path. One of these is the Veteran Readiness & Employment Program (VR&E) Program. Learn more about how it works, who can qualify for it, and how it can improve your career prospects.

How Does The Veteran Readiness & Employment Program Work?

The Veteran Readiness & Employment Program (VR&E) helps veterans with disabilities expand their professional skills based on their abilities and interests. Through this program, veterans can choose one of five main employment tracks: reemployment, rapid access to employment, self-employment, independent living, and employment through long-term services.

Depending on which path you choose, you would have access to features like:

  • Dedicated professional and vocational counseling
  • Resources to help you with searching for and securing a job
  • Skills assessments
  • Apprenticeships and volunteer opportunities
  • Training and guidance on how to run a small business

For instance, if you were injured in the military and now face mobility challenges, the VR&E could help you choose an appropriate career path. Once you choose one that suits you, the program could help you learn relevant skills and secure a job in that particular field.

Who Qualifies For The VR&E Program?

Only some veterans are eligible for the VR&E program. To be accepted, you couldn’t have received a dishonorable discharge, and you need to have a disability rating of at least 10% or more. After you submit your application, you’ll meet with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to determine whether or not you qualify for the program.

Benefits Of Joining The VR&E Program

When you join the VR&E program, you can learn the skills you need to achieve long-term financial stability. Aside from personalized career counseling, the VR&E will help you access the resources you need to successfully find a job in your chosen profession once your training is complete. This hands-on approach ensures you have everything they need to succeed.

What Is The Eligibility Period For The VR&E?

The eligibility period for the VR&E  will ultimately depend on when you were discharged from active duty. If you ended before January 1, 2013, your eligibility period is 12 years from when you were separated from active duty or received your first disability rating, whichever is later. Anyone discharged after this date will have unlimited time to apply for the program.
