How Do Veterans Qualify For Automobile Allowance And Adaptive Equipment?

If you have service-connected disabilities, finding appropriate transportation can be a challenge. Fortunately, the VA offers specific programs like the Automobile Allowance and Adaptive Equipment to help address these needs. Learn more about each program’s details and how you can qualify for them.

How Does The Automobile Allowance Work?

The VA’s Automobile Allowance is a unique program that helps veterans with specific disabilities purchase a vehicle that accommodates their medical condition. If you qualify, you’ll receive a one-time payment of $25,603.02 to buy a car, truck, or van. While it may not cover the entire cost of a vehicle, it reduces your financial burden and makes it easier to get the transportation you need.

What Is The Adaptive Equipment Allowance?

Besides the Automobile Allowance, the VA also offers an allowance for adaptive equipment. This program will help you cover the costs of equipment that adapts a vehicle to the veteran’s specific requirements.

This special equipment might include:

  • Wheelchair lifts
  • Hand controls
  • Power brakes
  • Raised roofs
  • An airlift
  • Pedal extenders
  • Power steering

Eligibility For Automobile Allowance And Adaptive Equipment

To qualify for an Automobile or Adaptive Equipment Allowance, you must prove that you suffer from specific disabilities. These conditions can include:

  • Losing or not being able to use one or both feet or hands
  • Permanent impairment of vision in both eyes
  • Severe burn injuries
  • Certain severe respiratory injuries
  • Joint immobility
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Besides having one of these medical conditions, you need to make a clear connection between your disability and military service.

Applying For A VA Automobile Allowance Or Adaptive Equipment

To apply for an Automobile Allowance, complete and submit VA Form 21-4502. The form is split into two sections. The first part will ask you to fill out your personal information and disability. As for the second part, the vehicle seller must complete it after you purchase. Remember, veterans must submit this form before buying a vehicle to ensure they’ll receive the benefit.

If you’re applying for the Adaptive Equipment Allowance, you need to complete VA Form 10-1394 as soon as possible. When you file the form, you’ll be asked to request the specific equipment and demonstrate how it relates to the service-connected disability. The VA will then review your application to determine eligibility and the extent of the benefit.
