What types of pensions are available?
There are different applications, benefits and standards depending on your "tier", "job title" and "years of service" in the New York State Retirement System. Your tier is based upon when you joined the Retirement System (not necessarily the date you started employment). The following is an explanation of the tiers:
TIER 1- Members who last joined before 7/1/73;
TIER 2 - Members who last joined on or after 7/1/73 and before 7/27/76;
TIER 3 - Members who last joined on or after 7/27/76 and before 9/1/83;
TIER 4 - Members who last joined on or after 9/1/83.
In addition, there are special provisions for certain "job titles" such as Correction Officers, Sheriffs, Probation Officers, Fire Marshals and Court Officers, to name just a few. Some pensions are available only to those who meet a minimum years of service requirement.
